If you are in to graffiti, street art or are a pop culture snob – these names should ring some bells for you. If not, all the more reason to get school by this film: these are perhaps some of the most significant figures in today’s art world. Until recently, most of their stories of how they came to be was not well known – until a few years ago when artist Aaron Rose and director Joshua Leonard decided to create the documentary film Beautiful Losers.
The Sidetrack Films production highlights how unrelated individuals came together and created one of the most profound cultural movement to came out of the 1990s. Though largely ignored then by mainstream culture, their works are the basis of today’s popular culture.
It was first shown in the US at SXSW and was well received. It came out in selected theatres in NY and LA and Tokyo this month – hopefully it’ll make its way down here soon. If not, it seems we can buy some stickers while we wait for the DVD to come out.
