Terminator-esque LED Helmets

Okay so it’s Olympic fever, and as apathetic as one can attempt to be, its hard not to get caught up in the Olympics one way or the other.

There’s two things in the world I like more than alcohol. One is technology. The other is sword fighting.
Olympic fencing, is a bit of both – so it gets me pretty damn excited. It’s not exactly a popular sport in Australia, I don’t think there are even any Australian competitors this year. But come on? it’s fast, it’s elegant, it’s bloody SWORD FIGHTING.

Anyway – what really makes the Olympic flavour of fencing especially entertaining, is the special gear they use. They’ve got these helmets with built in LED lights, that light up whenever the swords register a hit – which is a little bit Daft Punk and a little bit Terminator. Way cool.

    The masks are pretty cool. But my coach pointed out a couple drawbacks to this: 1. the plastic is expensive to replace, and can get very easily scratched in epee (foil isn’t really an issue) 2. The opponent can see your facial expressions and eye movements, making it easier to predict your moves.
    Other than this, they seem awesome. :)
