Urban Decay in Detroit

I just recently came across ObjectOrange, a group of Detroit artists drawing attention to the urban decay that the city is notorious for.

There are over 7000 abandoned buildings in Detroit, many of which are used for prostitution, drug dealing and all the other sorts of things that drive the middle class and their cash far, far away.

ObjectOrange have been launching stealth operations to cover some of these abandoned houses in “Tiggerific” orange paint. The group hopes its work will start conversations about the city and its direction as well as spurring action by the city.

There is a juxtaposition for me in the way the project on the one hand increase the impact of the blighted houses on their surrounding environment whilst at the same time make them somewhat more aesthetically pleasing. Well, at least to my aesthetic sensibilities!

A lot of the info I’ve founded on the group is a bit dated so I’m not sure how active they currently are. Either way, its an inspiring undertaking and we’ll keep you posted if we find out more.

After the jump more photos and a Good Magazine video piece with some of the group’s founders. Or visit Flickr to see more of their work.
