Ostel: The Communist Retro Hostel
While doing research for an upcoming Berlin escapade I stumbled across Ostel – a GDR themed Hostel in the heart of East Berlin. An apartment building that screams classic inspirational Eastern bloc architecture has been refurbished to recreate a communist workers holiday experience for the pampered capitalist youth who decides to indulge in some Berlin culture on their Euro sojourn.
Supposedly the interior design has kept true to the era, with historically true wallpaper, furniture and other artifacts throughout the building. They offer a few different themed rooms ranging from dorms through to private rooms that replicate the holiday experience of the Stasi and other higher ups. And it’s reasonably priced, with the added bonus that it’s in the Mitte district, supposedly a good part of town to check out, or so I’m told.
I love myself some cold war history and anything vaguely related is guarenteed to pique my interest. There is an undeniable romance surrounding the concept of East Berlin and whether or not Ostel has stayed completely true to the design aesthetic of the time, the pictures I’ve found suggest dopeness. So I’m putting in for a few nights at least.
