The Making of: The Eames Fibreglass Chair

Everyone knows the Eames shell chairs, right? Well if you don’t know it by name, you will definitely recognise the shape.

This video shows the making of the Charles and Ray Eames Shell Chair. It was originally designed in 1948 as part of a competition to produce low cost furniture, but has since gone on to become one of the most recognisable pieces of furniture design.

Apprantly they originally intended to use stamped metal, but it turned out to be too expensive. They ended up using fibreglass. It uses two basic seat designs, both available with multiple base options. These days you see them reproduced in different kinds of plastics, as well as fibreglass. The wood or metal ‘eifel tower base’ is the more common base you see in the design shops these days.

I have to own up to having a set of these (reproductions) at home. And I love them.
