Character – LED Sign Goodness

I’m a sucker for neon signs and the like. I coo like a childless female in her late 30′s who’s just been confronted with a adorable young tot every time i see a cool one in a design or antique store. I’ve been known to drool in public as I gaze in wonderment and envision said sign in my lounge room and/or glowing mysteriously behind my perfectly appointed dive bar. You may not understand why these emotions are stirred in my loins by such simple a thing as a glowing sign but you can probably understand why I made like a SNL sketch when I came across Character.
Why has Character got my heart all aflutter? Well they rescue and repair LEDs taken from stores and whatnot (as well as various LED sign mines and/or forests or whichever mythical place it is that these things come from) and make them available to any schmo like you and me. They even have a wishlist where you can register your desire for that perfect piece you’ve been looking for. Ah, the beauty of e-commerce.
At the Character HQ these things of beauty are rejigged with new power outlets and LEDs with a life span of 30,000 hours (Thats almost 3.5 YEARS of non-stop use for the arithmetically challenged amongst you) before being offered for sale at exorbitant prices. Seriously, the cheapest is about 260 euros. That’s like $50,000 aussie dollars before shipping which, if I remember correctly, buys you about a 2 pints of beer in Character’s Finnish homeland. However you are being environmentally conscious by reusing these signs instead of sending them to rot in a landfill somewhere. So in some ways buying one of these puts you into Captain Planet territory. Just don’t mention the power you’re gonna chew by having one of these on non-stop for 3 and a half years.
Never one to be deterred by my pathetic financial situation I will be buying one of the ones below. I just need to knock off a liquor store or complete some other piece of criminal mastermindery asap.

The life of most LEDs is actually over 50,000 hours, which translates to about 20 years for about 5 hours’ use per day. It’s very simple to make you own sign, just get the letter and install a flexible LED strip light or LED light modules inside. Also, most strips and module strings only use about 5 watts per meter.
